Frequent Occurance

During my time at the RISD pre-college program, I worked on an assignment that focused on film noir to create a black-and-white image depicting a dramatic event. While sketching thumbnails for the piece, I felt a drop of blood slide from my nose. I quickly ran to the bathroom and sketched my face in the bathroom mirror as blood flowed into the sink. I have been plagued by chronic nosebleeds my whole life, and it is normal for me to get a bloody nose once or twice a week. I decided to depict this often mundane event in my life but change the mood of the piece. I cropped out the top of my face and darkened the blood to dramatize it pouring from my nose. My process included a three dollar maroon liquid lipstick bought at the nearest pharmacy. I brought it into the studio and drew a dramatic line of red from my nose and propped a mirror next to me to sketch this piece from observation.
