While visiting my aunt’s dentist office a few years ago, I noticed a bowl of Invisalign trays on a table, oddly similar to the way fresh oranges are often displayed. She told me they were defective trays from her patients and offered them to me. I noticed that, as they rubbed against each other, they made a chattering sound reminding me of the claws of crabs or the clinking of shellfish. I created this fishing net as a sculptural piece with upcycled pieces of plastic, including the tooth trays, old bath loofahs, mattress cases, and disposable daily contact lens cases. My intention is to show the harmful effects of human consumption and waste on the environment. The net is composed entirely of plastic to show the excessive amount of non-biodegradable waste that ends up in the ocean and how wee put our selfish desires over the wellbeing of our planet.
